Fixing a fractured leg

This little Wallaby orphan came to us via another vet clinic, who diagnosed a fractured leg. X-rays showed us a leg that was fractured in three places. Luckily this boy is still young and mostly in the pouch, so our vets were able to stabilise the bone with a technique called external fixation, seen in the picture below.

Since all our wildlife treatment is fitted in for free in between other procedures, it was late when the little patient recovered from surgery. With his foster mum a few hours away in Jabiru, he stayed with one of our volunteer nurses overnight, who gave him night feeds and made sure his pain relief was topped up regularly.
